INCORPORATION
The business, named Priory Services after the beautiful and historic Priory in his home town of Christchurch, Dorset,
was formed by John Fisher in the early 80's. It was set up with a specific purpose, to trim doors ahead of the installation
of all types of flooring (i.e., carpet, laminate, wood floors, vinyl etc) and to ease doors which subsequently drag on
new floor coverings following installation.
BESPOKE DEVELOPMENT
John improved the design of an existing product to develop the 'PRIORY Door Trimming Saw' (MK1). The MK1 saw enabled all
types of wooden framed doors to be trimmed in place, without the need to remove them from their hinges. This is particularly
important where the hinge screws have been painted over after several years of decorating and the doors cannot be removed
or where fitters have installed successfully managed to lay underlay and carpet under the door but the door is unable to
be opened or closed.
John continued to refine the saw with prototypes being produced and thoroughly tested. Cutting heights
were reduced to ensure doors were trimmed as close to the carpet as possible but still allowing for necessary airflow.
Collection of sawdust during the cutting process was increased to over 95% through improved vacuum positioning.
NEXT GENERATION
My name is Tony Fisher and I am Johns 2nd son. After I embarked on a career change in 2001, John trained me in the specialist
installation of laminate and wood floors which became my sole trade. I served a large Customer base including homeowners,
flooring retailers, contract flooring companies, building companies and developers. Later in 2003, John and I discussed the
future of Priory Services, who were and still are, the only 'professional' door trimmers operating this much needed service.
It was agreed that I would scale down my flooring business in favour of door trimming enabling John to scale back ahead of his
retirement. Early in 2005 John took semi-retirement and reduced his working week to just 2 days with me working 3 days on doors
and the remaining 2 days on floors. He trained me in advance of this to ensure a smooth and efficient transition with our large
customer base was achieved.
Sadly, in mid-December, John was unexpectedly taken seriously ill and passed away just 2 short weeks later in the early hours
of New Years Eve 2005. This came to our family, and John's numerous friends and customers, as a huge shock. He was a very well liked
and respected man, and is still sadly missed. To this day I still receive comments from returning customers of their sadness
upon hearing this devastating news.
THE FUTURE
Today, I continue in John's footsteps. His door trimming legacy grows as word spreads further for this convenient and
cost-effective method of trimming doors, which now spans over 40 years. I no longer install wood floors but devote my time
to the ever expanding door trimming business.
I still maintain ongoing product development, testing and improving the Priory Door Trimming Saw. I am in the process of
submitting an application to the UK Patent Office in an endeavour to secure protectuion of the design and technical detail
of the saw.
Subject to satisfactory product protection, a nationwide franchise operation is being considered for rollout across the United
Kingdom and will provide our unique service to a large of customers all over the country under the brand name Door Trimming.
